Lesson Overview

Year 3-8 - Beep test
Timing and fitness tracking

Key Objectives

How well do you think you did? What could you do next time to get a better score?

Step 1 of 1

Activities

Equipment: A field or indoor gym, Cones, 20m measuring tape, beep test audio, speaker and recording sheets.

This test involves continuous running between two lines 20m apart in time to recorded beeps.

Make sure the class is warmed-up before you start. Mark out the field 20m long and wide enough of the class to stand along.

The class stand behind one of the lines facing the second line, and begin running when instructed by the recording. The speed at the start is quite slow. The class continues running between the two lines, when instructed by recorded beeps. After about one minute, sounds indicate an increase in speed, and the beeps will be closer together. This continues each minute(level). If the line is reached before the beep sounds, the student must wait until the beep sounds before continuing. If the line is not reached before the beeps sounds, the student is given a warning and must continue to run to the line, then turn and try to catch up with the pace within two more ‘beeps’. The subject is given a warning the first time they fail to reach the line (within 2 meters), and eliminated after the second warning. The students score is the level and number of shuttles (20m) reached before they were unable to keep up with the recording. The test is ended when everyone is eliminated. Record all the students results and keep for the next testing so you can compare results etc.
