Warm Up

Basketball - Shooting (BEEF)

The coach demonstrates the correct technique for shooting (BEEF). Balance (feet shoulder width apart, legs bent) Eyes (looking at hoop) Elbow (In front of body, 90 degrees) Follow through (elbow bent to straight, wrist flick).

Coach puts down enough spots for everyone under hoop (2-3m back from baseline), enough for the students to all have one each. Coach stands under hoop to retrieve ball. One at a time, student standing on their spot shoot using the BEEF technique. Once shot, the coach passes ball to next person in line for their turn. Once everyone has had their shot, players move along one spot/find a different spot to shoot from for another round.

Progressions:
Move spots back to make to harder. Make it a competition to see how many points individuals can get.

Activities

Basketball - 4 v 2

In this game there is one team of attackers, made up of 4 students and another team, the defenders, who have 2 students. The attackers start with the ball at one end of the playing area and try to score a point, by passing the basketball (no dribbling) amongst their team and land the basketball in a hoola hoop at the other end of the playing area. The defenders are trying to stop the attackers from scoring and if they manage to steal the ball, then the defenders will get a point for their team. If the defenders steal the ball OR if the attackers score a basket, one of the defenders will dribble the ball back and place it on the ground at the starting spot. When the coach blows the whistle the two defenders will swap and become attackers. One more round will be completed so that each student has had a turn at being both the attackers and defenders.

If there is time at the end you can add in dribbling for the attacking team. The coach can limit the amount of bounces an attacking player does with the ball (x3 -5 bounces) so they then have to pass and utilise team mates that are moving into space.

Modifications

Only allow passing with no dribbling. Add or take away dribbles allowed.

Special Needs Modifications

Use a softer ball that is easier to catch.

Basketball - Number Basketball

Split the class into two teams, with one team lining up on each side of the court. The coach calls out a number between 2-5, and that is how many people go in from the front of each line e.g. if a 2 is called, the first two people go in for that round. The players that go in must run and touch the wall or hoop opposite to the one they are scoring in, before running in and playing basketball. The team to score first gets a point, and all the players go to the back of their line.

Modifications

Put a time limit on how long players are allowed to score.
