To be able to pass the ball to a target using a variety of different techniques, and to understand the concept of passing and moving into space.

Notes

What are the different types of passes we use? (chest, bounce, baseball, overhead) What do we have to remember when passing? (See activity overview) What do we do after we pass? (move into space)

Warm Up

Miniball - Pair Passing

The students pair up and line up opposite their partner. The coach goes over the passing technique for a chest pass; make the letter W with your hands, step into pass, flat pass to your partners chest. Once the students have practiced the chest pass they will move onto the bounce bass. The coach will then go over the passing technique for a bounce pass; coming from the hip, bouncing on the ground 2/3 of the distance, ball staying low.

Special Needs Modifications

Use a softer ball that is easier to catch.

Activities

Miniball - Game

A game of miniball is made up of 5 players on each team. Each quarter will last 5 minutes with a 1 minute break between the quarters and at half time. Miniball is played with the same rules as standard basketball, not including the "Backcourt" rule and any rules that include time allowances (e.g. 3 second, 5 second or 24 second rules.) Also there are no free throws, instead any foul will result in an inbound from out of court. Miniball also has extra rules as follows:

Each player has a bib on that is a different colour to anyone else in their team, and can only defend another player with the same colour band (e.g. red band can only defend red band.)

After a basket, the team that scored must retreat to half way and allow the other team to advance the ball to that point before defending.

Team work is actively encouraged and any players being selfish with the ball will be reminded to play as a team.

Circle Tag

Students stand in a circle with one student in the middle (the tagger). The students forming the circle have to pass the ball around to any other student in the circle. While the ball is getting passed around the student in the middle is chasing the ball trying to either intercept the ball or tag a student who has caught the ball. Once tagged or intercepted, the student in the middle swaps with the child who has been tagged or had the ball intercepted from them.
