Why do we dribble the ball at waist height? (It is easier to control and harder to steal)
Why do we have our head up? (To see other players, to see the hoop, to watch out for defenders)
What was the rule of the day? (Double dribble)
Each player has their own basketball. The coach will walk around the group getting the students to dribble in different ways by saying "Simon Says dribble...":
- With a fist
- With the top of the hand
- With our finger tips and palms
Ask the players which hand type they think is the best and why (Palm not enough control of the ball. Fingertips better control of the ball)
Once identified which hand type to use, the coach will get the students to test different heights to dribble at by saying "Simon Says dribble..."
- To your knees
- To your nose
- To your waist
Ask the players which height they think is the best and why (knee too low, lose control, can't look up. Nose too high, other players can steal the ball. Waist just the correct height for control and keeping the ball safe, easy to look up to see where they are going).
Students will start without a ball, the court/playing area will be scattered with cones. Students will be learning to move in different ways while avoiding contact with others and obsticles. Students start with 3 lives, if they make contact with another person or obsticle they lose a life (students keep playing even if they lose all lives).
Start the group spread out in the area, coach calls out different ways to move e.g. walk, run, slide, hop, etc.
Extension: Add in a ball and use the same commands as previously mentioned.
A game of miniball is made up of 5 players on each team. Each quarter will last 5 minutes with a 1 minute break between the quarters and at half time. Miniball is played with the same rules as standard basketball, not including the "Backcourt" rule and any rules that include time allowances (e.g. 3 second, 5 second or 24 second rules.) Also there are no free throws, instead any foul will result in an inbound from out of court. Miniball also has extra rules as follows:
Each player has a bib on that is a different colour to anyone else in their team, and can only defend another player with the same colour band (e.g. red band can only defend red band.)
After a basket, the team that scored must retreat to half way and allow the other team to advance the ball to that point before defending.
Team work is actively encouraged and any players being selfish with the ball will be reminded to play as a team.
